Quick fix for an ugly edge

Here's an example of where a bench upstand doesn't meet up exactly flush with a wall. Not the nicest look, crumbs can fall over the side and it was easy to catch arms and fingers on the edge.

A really quick fix was to add this beading which has been painted to match the colour of the wall behind. Much tidier and smarter looking!

How do I fix my noisy and cold windows?

We are often asked what can be done about windows which bang or let the cold in - especially at this time of the year.

Fortunately this is one of those things that's really annoying but often very easy to fix.

The main cause is often gaps between the window and frame, rusty hinges or latches not being properly attached.

This can easily be fixed by getting a proper window seal, adjusting the latches so they pull the window tighter into the frame or replacing the hinges.

Like with all building work however, every house is different so what will work for one home won't work for another. 

What will be the case for most homes though is this can usually be fixed very cheaply and easily. 

You'll have the added benefit of a warmer and quieter home too!

Andrew Oakenfull
Andrew has been qualified since 2002 and has been working in building for a few years before that. He started off working in his school holidays and has worked in both New Zealand and the UK on residential and commercial sites, with a specialty in high end architecturally designed work.

Andrew has a (un)healthy obsession with Grand Designs and is pretty keen on his bbq. Andrew is a licensed building practitioner.

Ben Yung

Ben has been working for Andrew for a couple of years and is currently completing his apprenticeship.  He likes pies, his mum cooks awesome dim sum and he's not bad with a hammer.
